For hundreds of girls in Kenya, that place is Watoto Wema Centre, a charitable children’s institution located in Ruai, on the eastern outskirts of Nairobi. Since its founding in 2004, Watoto Wema has stood as a refuge for former street children, offering them not just shelter, but a genuine chance at a stable and hopeful future.
About Watoto Wema
Watoto Wema welcomes young girls between the ages of 4 and 10, taking them in at a critical stage in their development when stability and care matter most. Once a girl is admitted, the orphanage doesn’t offer a temporary fix — it becomes her long-term home. The center commits to providing shelter, care, and education all the way through high school graduation, or until she reaches 18 years of age, whichever comes first.
This long-term commitment is central to what makes Watoto Wema different. Rather than offering short-term relief, the center invests in the full arc of a child’s upbringing, giving girls the continuity and security that so many of them lacked before arriving.
The 2026 Initiative: Project Pamoja
To help ends meet, AndRestore has launched Project Pamoja — a 2026 initiative designed to fund essential learning and health supplies for these young women. Focused on the dual pillars of education and hygiene, the campaign aims to maximise fundraising efforts to keep the home fully stocked with textbooks and sanitary pads.
By securing basic school supplies and personal health items, Project Pamoja tackles some of the most fundamental — and most solvable — obstacles to a girl’s education. These aren’t abstract, complicated problems; they’re concrete needs that, once met, free these girls to focus on what matters most: learning, growing, and building the skills they’ll need for an independent future.
